What Unit 3 covers
Unit 3 is enzymes and energy. It covers how enzymes lower activation energy and how temperature, pH and inhibitors change their activity, then how cells capture and release energy: photosynthesis in the chloroplast (the light-dependent reactions on the thylakoid membrane, the Calvin cycle in the stroma) and cellular respiration (glycolysis in the cytosol, the Krebs cycle in the mitochondrial matrix, electron transport and chemiosmosis on the inner membrane), with fermentation when there is no oxygen.
Where students slip
- Enzymes lower the activation energy. They don't supply energy, and they aren't used up.
- Oxygen's job in aerobic respiration is to accept electrons at the end of the electron transport chain. It plays no direct part in glycolysis or the Krebs cycle.
- ATP synthase is driven by protons moving down their gradient (chemiosmosis), not by electrons.
- Fermentation makes no ATP beyond glycolysis. Its point is to regenerate NAD+ so glycolysis can keep going.
- Plants carry out cellular respiration all the time, not only in the dark.
The sets
Play this set opens the set in splycr, where you can read every question and host it for your class straight away. Hosting needs no account, and students join with the code on the board. A free account lets you copy a set and edit it.
The questions come from the Biology by Bradford flashcard bank, written by an IB and AP Biology teacher. Each one plays as multiple choice, and the wrong options are other answers from the same set.
The final electron acceptor at the end of the ETC?
Answer: Oxygen (O₂)
The enzyme that actually builds ATP as protons flow through it?
Answer: ATP Synthase
The main purpose of fermentation is to recycle ______ so glycolysis can repeat?
Answer: NAD⁺
The process of splitting water to provide electrons for the ETC?
Answer: Photolysis
Specific location of the Calvin cycle?
Answer: Stroma
Problem where Rubisco binds to O₂ instead of CO₂, wasting energy?
Answer: Photorespiration
Game modes that suit this unit
Every set plays in all eight modes. These two fit this unit best.

Racer in teams
Unit 3 questions turn on place and order: matrix or stroma, NADH or NADPH, which stage makes what. In team Racer only one teammate has the right option and a wrong answer sends the whole team back, so students argue it out first.

Boss Battle
A wrong answer heals the boss, which makes the classic swaps in this unit cost something, and streaks of right answers hit harder. A class that slows down and gets electron transport right wins.
