What Unit 5 covers

Unit 5 is meiosis and inheritance: how meiosis makes four haploid cells that differ from each other and from the parent cell, how crossing over and independent assortment create that variation, and Mendel's laws and the crosses built on them. Then the patterns Mendel's laws don't predict: linked and sex-linked genes, incomplete dominance and codominance, polygenic traits and mitochondrial inheritance, along with the effect of the environment on phenotype and chromosomal errors such as nondisjunction.

Where students slip

  • Homologous chromosomes are a pair, one from each parent. Sister chromatids are two identical copies of one chromosome.
  • Crossing over (prophase I) and independent assortment (metaphase I) are separate sources of variation.
  • Dominant doesn't mean common, or better. It says which allele shows in a heterozygote.
  • Linked genes are inherited together more often than independent assortment predicts. The further apart they are, the more often crossing over separates them.

The sets

Play this set opens the set in splycr, where you can read every question and host it for your class straight away. Hosting needs no account, and students join with the code on the board. A free account lets you copy a set and edit it.

The questions come from the Biology by Bradford flashcard bank, written by an IB and AP Biology teacher. Each one plays as multiple choice, and the wrong options are other answers from the same set.

    Answer: Law of Segregation

  2. Situation where both alleles are fully expressed (e.g., AB blood type)?

    Answer: Codominance

  3. Genes located close together on the same chromosome that tend to be inherited together?

    Answer: Linked Genes

Game modes that suit this unit

Every set plays in all eight modes. These two fit this unit best.

  • Racer solo

In solo Racer the track is as long as the set, up to 12 cards, and one wrong answer sends a student back to the start. The two Unit 5 sets have 11 questions each, so finishing takes eleven right answers in a row.

  • Kaboom

Quick terms (allele, genotype, codominance) keep the bomb moving, and everyone plays to the last explosion, so students who are still unsure keep answering rather than sitting out.
