What Unit 7 covers

Unit 7 is evolution. It covers natural and artificial selection; the other ways allele frequencies change (genetic drift, including bottlenecks and the founder effect, gene flow and mutation); Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium as the model of a population that is not evolving; the evidence for common ancestry from fossils, anatomy and molecules; reading phylogenetic trees and cladograms; how new species form; extinction; and hypotheses for the origin of life.

Where students slip

  • Individuals don't evolve; populations do. Selection acts on individuals, and the population's allele frequencies change.
  • Organisms don't develop traits because they need them. The variation is already there, and selection acts on it.
  • Fitness means reproductive success, not strength or speed.
  • In Hardy-Weinberg problems the frequency of the recessive phenotype is q², not q: take its square root to find q.
  • On a phylogenetic tree, how related two groups are depends on their most recent common ancestor, not on how close their tips are drawn.

The sets

Play this set opens the set in splycr, where you can read every question and host it for your class straight away. Hosting needs no account, and students join with the code on the board. A free account lets you copy a set and edit it.

The questions come from the Biology by Bradford flashcard bank, written by an IB and AP Biology teacher. Each one plays as multiple choice, and the wrong options are other answers from the same set.

Game modes that suit this unit

Every set plays in all eight modes. These two fit this unit best.

  • Sabotage

Sabotage runs to a clock you set (3, 5 or 8 minutes), not through the deck, so the questions keep coming until time is up. Power cards (freeze, steal, swap, shield) keep a student who is behind in the game.

  • Throne

Types of selection and Hardy-Weinberg terms reward the student who really knows them. Put that student on the throne and let the class try to take it.
