IB Biology theme D: Continuity and change

14 ready-made review sets for this theme, by subtopic and marked SL or HL, plus 1 mixed review set that runs into it. Free to host, and students join with a code.

A question from the sets

The enzyme that creates a short RNA primer to provide an attachment point for DNA Polymerase?

  • DNA Ligase
  • DNA PrimaseRight answer
  • Okazaki Fragments
  • Leading Strand
From D1.1 DNA Replication, 18 questions.

What Theme D covers

Theme D is about how life continues and changes. Molecules: DNA replication, protein synthesis, and mutations and gene editing. Cells: cell and nuclear division and water potential, with gene expression at higher level. Organisms: reproduction, inheritance and homeostasis. Ecosystems: natural selection, stability and change, and climate change.

Where students slip

  • Count chromosomes by centromeres: after replication a chromosome is two sister chromatids, but still one chromosome.
  • Mitosis makes two genetically identical nuclei; meiosis makes four that differ, each with half the chromosome number.
  • Transcription makes RNA from a DNA template; translation makes a polypeptide from mRNA at a ribosome.
  • Water moves from higher to lower water potential, and adding solute makes water potential lower (more negative).
  • Homeostasis relies on negative feedback: a change sets off a response that reverses it.

The sets

Play this set opens the set in splycr, where you can read every question and host it for your class straight away. Hosting needs no account, and students join with the code on the board. A free account lets you copy a set and edit it.

The questions come from the Biology by Bradford flashcard bank, written by an IB and AP Biology teacher. Each one plays as multiple choice, and the wrong options are other answers from the same set.

Sets marked SL suit every IB Biology student, because higher level students study the standard level content too. Sets marked HL cover the additional higher level material, and six subtopics are for higher level only: A2.1, A2.3, A3.2, B3.3, C2.1 and D2.2. Some sets are marked SL and HL, and cover both.

Game modes that suit this theme

Every set plays in all eight modes. These two fit this theme best.

  • Throne

One student defends the throne against the whole class, and a wrong answer from the champion costs double. Mitosis and meiosis terms make a good duel at the end of a topic.

  • Cryo

For a lighter lesson: students move round a frozen arena and answer a question from the set correctly to reload. Up to 20 players.
